Delivering for Merton & Wandsworth

Greetings, and welcome to my website!  Merton and Wandsworth are not just places; they’re the heartbeat of our shared values and aspirations. From our bustling streets to our green spaces, Merton and Wandsworth is home to tens of thousands of diverse, resilient and compassionate Londoners. I’m proud to be your voice at City Hall.

What We've Achieved

Free school meals

No child should go hungry in our classrooms. That’s why, for the first time ever, Labour is using City Hall’s budget to fund free, hot, nutritious meals for London’s state primary school children. This supports the next generation and helps families struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, saving parents around £440 per year.

New golden era of council housebuilding

After decades of inaction, Labour has got London building again. More council homes are now being built than at any time since the 1970s – a tenfold increase since Labour took back City Hall. Overall housebuilding in London has reached levels not seen since the 1930s, with Labour at City Hall  delivering a record-breaking 25,000 genuinely affordable homes in the last year alone.

Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime

Keeping Londoners safe and reforming the Met is Labour’s top priority. After years of Tory cuts to policing and youth services, he’s been investing record sums from City Hall to try and repair the damage and build a safer London for everyone. Sadiq Khan has put more officers on London’s streets, restored neighbourhood policing and spent millions of pounds on creating positive opportunities for 300,000 young Londoners.

New golden era of council housebuilding

After decades of inaction,  Labour’s Sadiq Khan  got London building again. More council homes are now being built than at any time since the 1970s – a tenfold increase since Labour took back City Hall. Overall housebuilding in London has reached levels not seen since the 1930s, with Sadiq delivering a record-breaking 25,000 genuinely affordable homes in the last year alone.

Making public transport better, greener and more affordable

Labour  introduced the Hopper bus fare and delivered a five-year freeze on TfL fares, making transport 12% cheaper now than it would have been for millions of Londoners. He’s also introduced The Superloop, opened the Night Tube and delivered the Elizabeth Line. And he’s made transport in London cleaner by investing in greener buses and electric taxis, and by delivering a five-fold increase in protected cycling lanes.

World-leading action to tackle air pollution and the climate crisis

Labour has made London a beacon for climate action the world over. Sadiq Khan introduced the world’s largest clean air zone – helping to cut toxic air pollution by half in central London – planted more than half a million trees, and brought forward London’s net zero target to 2030. Labour is also rewilding London, investing in green jobs, and supporting efforts to turn the capital into a global centre for green finance.

Working for you

I was elected to the London Assembly in May 2016 and was re-elected in 2021 with a more than three-fold increase my majority. I’m grateful for the trust Merton and Wandsworth residents have put in me and work to repay that trust in my work at City Hall.

I am Deputy Leader of the Labour group at City Hall and lead for Labour on the Environment. I chaired the Assembly’s Environment Committee from 2016-2018, and was Deputy Chair 2018-2021.

For two years 2019-2021, I was the Chair of the Economy Committee, which then produced its first-ever report on the Skills required for the Low-Carbon, Circular Economy, as well as looking at Food Insecurity, the Mayor’s Economic achievements and the impact of Brexit.

Prior to my election in May 2016, I worked in  environmental sustainability and campaigned on air quality – an issue that I have continued to work on since being elected.

Leonié Cooper

Leonie Cooper AM was elected to the London Assembly in May 2016. She was re-elected in 2021 with a more than three-fold increase in her majority. She is Deputy Leader of the Labour group at City Hall and leads for Labour on the Environment. Leonie chaired the Assembly’s Environment Committee from 2016-2018, and was Deputy Chair 2018-2021.

Under her leadership, the Committee produced reports:

  1. with recommendations on how to reduce single-use plastic bottle waste in London, which led to the Mayor’s programme of water fountains and work with Refill London;
  2. on how to tackle Londoners’ fuel poverty, which led to the first Mayoral Fuel Poverty Strategy;
  3. on how to maintain London’s parks and open spaces, despite budget cuts.

Leonie also produced her own report for the Assembly Housing Committee on biodiversity in new housing developments, with recommendations to introduce biodiversity net gain and the Urban Greening Factor, which were then included in the new London Plan.

Prior to her election in May 2016, Leonie worked in the field of environmental sustainability and campaigned on air quality – an issue she has continued to work on since being elected.

For two years 2019-2021, Leonie was the Chair of the Economy Committee, which then produced its first-ever report on the Skills required for the Low-Carbon, Circular Economy, as well as looking at Food Insecurity, the Mayor’s Economic achievements and the impact of Brexit. During 2020, the Committee focused on the economic impacts of the pandemic on businesses, on self-employed and furloughed Londoners, on London’s many high streets and on trade in the pre-Christmas period.
